My hoop journey started October 4th, 2010 when my husband signed me up for my very first hoop class on our vacation to London, England. My husband’s Godsister is a hoop instructor, and I took my first class with her.
I thought that taking a hoop class would be easy and I went into it with a cocky attitude that I would be good at it. Man, I was blown away by what we learned in our first class and I was thoroughly humbled. It was so hard, but I was so intrigued. I purchased my first handmade hoop in London. Tracy Chin hand-made our hoops for my husband and I, they turned out beautifully. We still have our original hoops and I still use mine. Hooping stayed on my mind from that very first class.
I was hooked.
Once I got my hoop, I almost never put it down. I hooped alone for the first year before meeting anyone else who did this. I honestly didn’t think there was a community for hoopers. I finally made a friend who also hooped at my work. What a beautiful thing to find someone who was interested in hooping too. We would go to yoga and hoop together. One day at a yoga class, a man of approached my husband and told him about other hoop related activities in the area.
My hoop journey snowballed from that day.
I ended up signing up for an all-levels hoop class and attended my first World Hoop Day in 2011. I can’t tell you how many amazing people I have met through the hoop and hoop dance. It is a very loving and inviting community.
Through hooping, I got involved in a performance troupe called the Hoola Monsters and received a license/certification with a program called Hoola-Fit. The certification has entirely changed my life. This October, I celebrated six years as a teacher and eight years in my personal practice. The class that I teach is for all levels. If you can’t hoop you should come and see me.
If you can hoop I will help you grow in your dance.
The word dance sometimes scares people away. The longer you hoop, the stronger your connection will be with your hoop. Hoop dance or fitness touches people differently. For some it relieves stress, for others, it creates a movement meditation, and it just makes you feel happy.
My hoop classes create a safe environment to meet other people as well. Our hoop community is growing in the Brandon and Plant City areas. I am very proud of all of my students.
When I first started teaching, I thought I would only teach adults. When I decided to leave my full-time job after 11 years to pursue my hoop passion as a career, I took on the adventure of teaching children.
Kids classes have been a great addition for me as a teacher. They learn differently and receive the joy on a different level. They teach me every day, as well as my adult students. I live to inspire, but I also get inspired by every one of my students.
Let me share my joy with you.
